How hard can it be?

Jon Lim clothing line, entrepreneurship Life 4 Comments

Been mulling over a semi-serious decision over the past few days, an idea that’s been sitting in the back of my mind for years now: starting a clothing line.

Yes, I am pretty serious about it. It would be a clothing line that starts off with mostly hoodies with funky designs and patterns, because that’s exactly the kind of clothing I want. Still in the process of making a few designs and finding a place to get it done or doing it myself!

Stay tuned for progress!

Dropping the ball.

Jon Lim Featured Album Fridays, Life, trivial trivia Life 0 Comment

Well, it seems that reading week has broken me down and took away any hope of productivity on my end, but I wish to change that. I missed out on updates to Trivial Trivia and Featured Album Fridays, but I’ll pick them up again when I can.

For now, I guess I’m going to become hyper-focused, and complete all the work that I need to do ASAP, so I have a little more time to do what I want to do.

To Do:

  1. Complete all projects and assignments
  2. Ensure timelines for LIVE 2009 are on schedule
  3. Complete MESA Gala videos
  4. Get a co-op placement

Want To Do:

  1. Get cracking on PHP/iPhone development
  2. Produce a short film
  3. Build my Hackintosh

It’s going to take an enormous amount of focus on my end, and I’m going to get everything done. Wish me luck!

By the way, the answer to the last Trivial Trivia was 4615972308.

Blocking my path

Jon Lim obstacles, progress, vocal Life 0 Comment

I came out of the gym to discover somebody sitting on one of the two sets of stairs that I need to descend to get to my class. On the other side, someone was coming up, and they are too narrow for two people to ascend/descend simultaneously.

What did I do? I waited for an opportunity to go down.

When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I thought to myself, when people are acting as obstacles to your progress, are you going to sit idly by and wait for an opportunity, or will you be proactive and be vocal enough to move those people?

A Helping Hand for the Neighbours

Jon Lim Help, Neighbour, Shoveling, Snow Life 4 Comments

It is 4:40am, and I have just come inside after shovelling my driveway. Yes, you read that correctly, I shovelled my driveway at four in the morning. Why? Well, for starters, I didn’t want to drive onto the newly fallen snow to park my car, because it would just compress the snow and make it even more difficult to shovel. So I busted out the shovel and 40 minutes later, a clean (somewhat) driveway!

My Driveway

After all that back breaking labour, I thought to myself, well, that’s a huge load off anyone’s mind in the coming morning. Great, I’ve done my family a good service.

But I thought of something while doing my walk way.

My Walkway

I realized that it would really make things easier for my neighbours if they had a shovelled walkway to their garage as well. Why? Well, I don’t think anyone on this street has in-house access to their garage, and most people keep their shovels in their garage. This combination can be troublesome for most people as they have to trudge in the snow before they can get to their shovels.

So I spent an extra 5 minutes to shovel the walkways of the neighbours to the left and right of my house, and made a little shoveled path to their garage.

Will it makes things easier for my neighbours? Maybe. But they now know that my family will give them a helping hand, and I hope they show that kind of love to my family and the rest of the neighbourhood.

Happy shoveling folks!

Happy New Year; Goals for 2009

Jon Lim 2009, Daily Challenge, GigaOM, Goals, New Year, Om Malik Life 0 Comment

Happy new year to all! We’ve entered 2009 and said good-bye to 2008. Hurray!

Now here comes the fun part: the goals for this year! I refuse to call them resolutions because most people fail to complete their resolutions. Also, this is my Daily Challenge for today! Here’s the quick and dirty rundown of my goals for 2009:

  1. Become accustomed to the Apple iPhone SDK within the first 6 months of 2009.
  2. Create at least two Apple iPhone Apps by December 31, 2009
  3. Create a brand new WordPress Theme for JonLim.ca so I can finally have a layout of my own
  4. Produce at least three videos I would want to include in my portfolio

They are all self explanatory, and have a timeline as well as specific goal to attain. This list is by no means complete, as it will constantly change as time goes on, but it’s a good start.

On a side note, just wanted to share a fantastic blog post from Om Malik regarding the acceptance of mediocrity during 2008. It’s a great read, and really gives you food for thought. Let’s use 2009 to begin making positive changes for ourselves, our friends, and our country!

Happy new year, everyone!

I’m Afraid

Jon Lim Afraid, Fears, Haunted, Old Finch Life 0 Comment

I’m afraid of loss. I’m afraid of losing the good in my life.
I’m afraid of pain. I’m afraid of avoidable pain.
I’m afraid of the unexpected. I’m afraid of not being in control.
I’m afraid of the unexplained. I’m afraid of not knowing enough.

I’m afraid of failure. I’m afraid of not learning from failure.

After getting back from a rabble-rousing trip down a haunted road here in Scarborough, and it got me thinking. No, not about a possible ghost that would be summoned by wonderful rendition of happy birthday. Instead, I was thinking about how it feels to be afraid to take the plunge, into the unexpected, into possible failure.

A little background: someone inside the car was freaking out about driving down this “haunted” road. All I could think was – “Why don’t they want to do something fun, like proving to yourself that this road is not haunted?” Were they really afraid of a ghost, or was it just the fact that you can never know what to expect on these kind of late night drives?

But… would any of us be where we are today, if we knew exactly what was around every corner of our lives? If we could control every variable? If consequences could be selected? If every aspect were revealed? If you were afraid of not knowing the outcome of everything, would you not act too cautious for every single decision in your life?

To keep it short and simple, sometimes, you have to shake things up and take the plunge. Drop your fears, take what you are given, and enjoy every minute of it.

You only have one life to live.
