Featured Album Fridays / John Vanderslice – Romanian Names (2009)

Jon Lim Featured Album Fridays, folk, indie, John Vanderslice, Music, Romanian Names Featured Album Fridays, Music 1 Comment

This week on Featured Album Friday, I’m showcasing John Vanderslice’s 2009 album – Romanian Names.

John Vanderslice - Romanian Names

A description of John Vanderslice can be found from his Last.FM:

John Vanderslice (born May 22, 1967 in Gainesville, Florida) is an American musician, formerly of MK Ultra but now performing with his own band.

After mk Ultra broke up in 1999, Vanderslice wasted little time building a solo reputation. In 2000, he gained national media attention over his single Bill Gates Must Die after concocting an elaborate hoax in which Microsoft supposedly threatened legal action over supposed trademark violations (the disc had a similar etching to a Windows installation disc).

Subsequent albums, Time Travel is Lonely, Life and Death of an American Fourtracker, Cellar Door, Pixel Revolt and Emerald City have gained critical acclaim for their melodic quality and sophisticated narrative lyrical content. Vanderslice has spent much of the last few years on tour across North America, Europe, and Japan.

Vanderslice also founded a recording studio in 1997 called Tiny Telephone. Located in the Mission District of San Francisco, Tiny Telephone has carved out a niche as the last all-analog recording studio in the Bay Area, and has a policy of setting recording rates under market prices. Bands who have used Vanderslice’s studio include Beulah, Death Cab for Cutie, Okkervil River and Spoon.

Vanderslice is a proponent of using analog instruments and recording equipment to produce a richer, more raw sound which he has sometimes called “dirty hi-fi”. He has collaborated closely with Scott Solter in the production of his recent albums, with Pixel Revolt being notably shaped by Solter.

Hope you guys enjoy his album, as usual, the stream is below.

Facilitating the Super Stars

Jon Lim LIVE Conference 2009, Messy, Super Stars Life 0 Comment

Over the weekend, I was in Muskoka at a place called Fairy Lake for the first official team retreat for LIVE Conference 2009. We spent a great deal of time bonding with each other and having a ton of fun, which should be the goal of every retreat.

Cooking meals and cleaning up are probably two of the more menial tasks while on a retreat. The chef usually gets last dibs on food and the dish washer has to physically handle the leftovers and messes that other people create. During the retreat, I spent a lot of time cooking the meals for my team, and my fellow Co-Chair, Bilal, spent a lot of time washing the dishes.

But hold on for a second, why are the Co-Chairs doing the least rewarding and most time consuming jobs when they could have delegated it off to the other executives there? What was everyone else doing?

Well, that’s easy, and it’s a pretty accurate analogy of how the LIVE team works. Bilal and I did a lot of the heavy lifting for the cooking and cleaning because our roles are to make the lives of our executives easier, so they can focus on the main objective.

In terms of the retreat, the main objective was to relax, bond with the team, and of course, have fun. Did they accomplish that? I certainly hope so!

For the conference, it will be much of the same. Bilal and I will take care of the trivial and possibly messy tasks, to ensure that our super star executives can keep focus on the objective at hand: making LIVE 2009 the best undergraduate business conference in Canada.

Bilal and I will get our hands dirty to ensure that the executives have the drive and determination to succeed. In turn, I hope our executives will get their hands dirty to ensure that the delegates of LIVE 2009 get blown away by the conference.

Will they succeed? Hell yeah, that was never a question. The real question is, what heights will they take it to?

I can’t wait to find out.

Run Like a Champion

Jon Lim Analysis, Efficiency, Planning, Wasteful Activities Life 6 Comments

Running

Today after a run at the gym, I took a look around at the other runners. I was surprised to see the amount of waste movement that many runners seem to have, which greatly affects their endurance and stamina. Now let me just say, I’m not a champion marathon runner, but I do know a thing or two about running.

Let me describe an efficient stride as best as I can:

  • Shoulders are set and are not moving
  • Arms are swinging forward, not side to side or diagonally
  • Entire upper body barely moves
  • Knees kept low
  • Running heel to toe with the feet

The main emphasis of the efficient stride is very minimal movement of non-necessary appendages. But of course, the message behind this post isn’t on how to run more efficiently, but you saw that coming.

Many people seem to go through life doing trivial and wasteful activities. For example, I spend a lot of time worrying. Worrying about academics, extracurriculars, friends, family, and basically everything under the sun. It’s a very tiring endeavour, similar to running inefficiently. How would you make life more efficient?

Analyze. Look through what you spend a lot of time doing, and really think about it. Is it helping in your personal growth? Is it helping you advance in your career? Does it help you meet your goals? If not, why are you doing it?

Plan. My friend Cheryl Ho lists four helpful tips on how to better manage our time, and it’s a great start. Allocate time for your priorities and remain proactive. Your life is in your control and if you plan wisely and stick to it, your wasteful activities should be minimized and you will notice an increase in productivity.

You would be surprised at how many wasteful activities you will find in your life, and you only ever realize during crunch time. With proper analysis and planning, crunch time will be more manageable and you will be less stressed.

So what are you waiting for? Cut the fat and run like a champion!

Featured Album Fridays / Fanfarlo – Reservoir (2009)

Jon Lim Fanfarlo, Featured Album Fridays, indie, Music, Reservoir Featured Album Fridays, Music 0 Comment

This week, I’m showcasing an indie folk band! Featured Album Fridays presents Fanfarlo’s 2009 album, Reservoir.

Fanfarlo - Reservoir

Here’s the band’s description from Last.FM:

Fanfarlo were conceived by Simon (vocals, guitar, keys, mandolin, sax, glock) while he was taking shelter in a forest from a particularly heavy snowstorm in Sweden. Inspired to move to London to form the band, he quickly found allies in Justin (bass) and Leon (trumpet/keyboards) when playing small gigs around the city. Mark (electric guitar, keys, vocals, accordian, fanfarlophone) then joined, and Fanfarlo’s electronic backing track was ceremoniously destroyed when Amos (drums & percussion, vocals) was enlisted to complete the rhythm section. After the launch gig of their first single, PlayTalking Backwards, in late 2006, Cathy (violin, keys, mandolin, glock, vocals, saw) was wooed over banana smoothies and the line-up was complete.

Their second single,PlayYou Are One Of The Few Outsiders Who Really Understands Us was BBC Radio 6’s single of the week, and they’ve released the double A-side, PlayFire Escape / PlayWe Live By The Lake (on White Heat records), Fanfarlo will be playing festivals in the UK throughout the summer and recording their debut album.

Fanfarlo’s latest single is another double A-side “Harold T Wilkins” with Sleeping States “call me” on Felt Tip Records.

Great album, so give it a listen in the stream below!

Enjoy!

Education vs Originality

Wanted to share this post from Mitch Joel’s blog, regarding the future of education.

Check it out, especially the video of Sir Ken Robinson and his talk at a TED conference from several years ago. I will leave you with a quote that stuck to me:

What should Nokia do?

Jon Lim Mobile Phones, Nokia, Smartphone Mobile 2 Comments

Earlier today, I tweeted about my feelings regarding the status of Nokia as a cell phone brand and company, and how their smartphones were being disregarded for the most part. Keep in mind that I myself carry a Nokia E71 and for the most part have been pleased with it, but several issues have turned me off from the phone and brand completely.

But what can Nokia do? They have been completely brushed off in North America in the race for the latest and best smartphones. Quite a shame, because Nokia has historically made very solid phones with great features.

So what SHOULD they do? Simple: skip the smartphone generation, take the next quantum leap forward in mobile phones.

Alright, not so simple, but it would be a game changer in the mobile industry. Think beyond touch screens, think beyond multi-touch, and think beyond what a smartphone is.

Don’t play catch up with everyone else, be a trail-blazer.

Technologically stagnant

Jon Lim Cell Phones, Rogers, telecommunications Mobile 0 Comment

Considering that Rogers has more than 6 million postpaid wireless subscribers (Source) where a good number of them still pay their System Access Fees, why are we still paying an arm and a leg for complacency? Let’s crunch the numbers:

$6.95 – System Access Fee
6,451,000 – Approximate number of postpaid subscribers, as of December 31, 2008

ASSUMPTION: 80% pay their System Access Fee (Because many people, like myself, have had it waived. VERY conservatively low number, as I believe almost no one really waived it, but this is to be safe.)

$6.95 x (6,451,000 * 80%) = $35,867,560 per MONTH

Can someone please tell me why, with an extra $35 million per month in what is essentially profit, is Rogers not vastly improving our service by leaps and bounds? If someone wants to correct me as to what that System Access Fee goes towards, then please leave a comment!

UPDATE: Just found this article from the Toronto Star, here’s an important little snippet:

The investigation also revealed that many customer service agents employed by the various cellphone companies were incorrectly telling subscribers the fee was a mandatory government charge collected on behalf of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

Such a charge, while it was required two decades ago when the cellphone industry was just getting started, no longer exists. The fee, however, is still being collected.

Well then!

Addicted to Video Games?

Jon Lim CBC, Fifth Estate, Video Games Video Games 0 Comment

I’m going to preempt tonight’s Fifth Estate on CBC, which is entitled “Top Gun: When a video gaming obsession turns to addiction and tragedy”.

Fifth Estate Header

I can only guess, but I’m going to guess this is about that boy who ran away from home because his parents took away his Xbox. We’ve all heard the story, straight-A student becomes Xbox controller-wielding demon-child who runs away when his games are taken away from him.

Please.

Video games had nothing to do with it. I have played video games for over 15 years now and I have managed to simultaneously balance school, extracurricular activities, and a social life while getting my video gaming time in. Despite this being the case for many people, the media still seems to enjoy pointing fingers at everything other possible factor, but the responsibility clearly falls on the shoulders of the parents.

Take care of your kids, pay attention to what they are doing, and nudge them in the right direction if they stray. Is that really so hard?

Grow a back bone and stop pointing fingers, video games are harmless.
