Opening Doors

Jon Lim Doors, Motivation Life 0 Comment

While walking around, I have a habit of opening doors for people. I will jog ahead and open that door without any desire for reciprocity, just wanting to hopefully pick someone’s day up.

Lately, I’ve noticed quite a few people who do not even attempt to open the door for themselves, and seem to demand that I open it for them. I do not know these people.

Plenty of people seem to expect doors to be opened for them, more so than in the literal sense. They want everything to be done for them, and are not willing to get their hands dirty to get what they want.

But if you can’t open the door for yourself, why do you think I would do it for you?

Featured Album Fridays / Cymbals Eat Guitars – Why There Are Mountains (2009)

Jon Lim Cymbals Eat Guitars, Featured Album Fridays, indie, Music, Why There Are Mountains Featured Album Fridays, Music 0 Comment

Picking up Featured Album Fridays on a regular basis again I hope! This week, I’m taking a look at Cymbals Eat Guitars’ 2009 album – Why There Are Mountains.

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains

From their Last.FM:

Aside from referencing a piece of Lou Reed’s philosophy about recording rock bands, the name “Cymbals Eat Guitars” is suggestive of a group of musicians infighting, vying for dominance over the sonic field— Reed and Cale on White Light/White Heat, organ vs. fuzz guitar. Well, we’d best put a halt to the Velvets nods so as not to mislead you… Cymbals Eat Guitars sound nothing like the Velvet Underground, and they have little interest in attempting to drown each other out.

They draw little inspiration from the skuzzy, minimalist heroin-cooled din that group pioneered in the late 60’s. What do they sound like, then? One could sit around rattling off possible sources of influence for days—the highly unusual and infectious melodies could suggest an obsession with Pavement, the moments of hair-raising, goose bump-inducing, utterly anthemic sonic assault would seem to point towards Built To Spill or Sonic Youth… the streamlined pop of “Some Trees (Merritt Moon)” even suggests Wire circa Chairs Missing.

Check out their album below, real good listen! Enjoy.

How hard can it be?

Jon Lim clothing line, entrepreneurship Life 4 Comments

Been mulling over a semi-serious decision over the past few days, an idea that’s been sitting in the back of my mind for years now: starting a clothing line.

Yes, I am pretty serious about it. It would be a clothing line that starts off with mostly hoodies with funky designs and patterns, because that’s exactly the kind of clothing I want. Still in the process of making a few designs and finding a place to get it done or doing it myself!

Stay tuned for progress!

Dropping the ball.

Jon Lim Featured Album Fridays, Life, trivial trivia Life 0 Comment

Well, it seems that reading week has broken me down and took away any hope of productivity on my end, but I wish to change that. I missed out on updates to Trivial Trivia and Featured Album Fridays, but I’ll pick them up again when I can.

For now, I guess I’m going to become hyper-focused, and complete all the work that I need to do ASAP, so I have a little more time to do what I want to do.

To Do:

  1. Complete all projects and assignments
  2. Ensure timelines for LIVE 2009 are on schedule
  3. Complete MESA Gala videos
  4. Get a co-op placement

Want To Do:

  1. Get cracking on PHP/iPhone development
  2. Produce a short film
  3. Build my Hackintosh

It’s going to take an enormous amount of focus on my end, and I’m going to get everything done. Wish me luck!

Trivial Trivia / Timepieces Answer / Mystery Number

Jon Lim Brain Teasers, logic, Trivia Brainteasers 2 Comments

Another day, another new brain teaser! Here was the answer to “Timepieces”:

An hourglass.

Simple eh? The next one will be slightly more difficult, so brace yourselves. I think I’m going to use more difficult ones from here on out, just to make it interesting!

There is a 10-digit number, represented by ABCDEFGHIJ, where each numeral, 0 through 9, is used once. Given the following clues, what is the number?

1) A + D = a square number
2) G + J = a triangle number
3) B + I = an even number
4) E * F = an odd number
5) C * H = a prime number
6) A / G = G / C
7) E + I = B + H

Have fun!

Trivial Trivia / The Poison Answer / Timepieces

Jon Lim Brain Teasers, logic, Trivia Brainteasers 2 Comments

Here is the answer for Sunday’s brain teaser. Once again, Vijaya came rather close, but not quite. Here is the answer:

The treasurer’s plan was to drink a weak poison prior to the meeting with the king, and then he would drink the pharmacist’s strong poison, which would neutralize the weak poison. As his own poison he would bring water, which will have no effect on him, but the pharmacist who would drink the water, and then his poison would surely die. When the pharmacist figured out this plan, he decided to bring water as well. So the treasurer who drank poison earlier, drank the pharmacist’s water, then his own water, and died of the poison he drank before. The pharmacist would drink only water, so nothing will happen to him. And because both of them brought the king water, he didn’t get a strong poison like he wanted.

Pretty sneaky! Here’s another one. Answers up on Thursday.

A sundial is a timepiece that has the fewest number of moving parts. Which timepiece has the most moving parts?

Ladies and gentlemen, have fun!

Trivial Trivia / The Poison

Jon Lim Add new tag, Brain Teasers, logic, Trivia Brainteasers 2 Comments

Welp, I got one response yesterday for the logic brainteaser from Vijaya and she was very close! She made an assumption out of nowhere, but she did have the right lines of thinking. Here is the answer for yesterday’s logic problem:

Wait until night time, and then go through the magnifying glass room.

Sneaky eh?

Here’s another problem that is intricate and interesting, hopefully more response from this one!

In a far away land, it was known that if you drank poison, the only way to save yourself is to drink a stronger poison, which neutralizes the weaker poison. The king that ruled the land wanted to make sure that he possessed the strongest poison in the kingdom, in order to ensure his survival, in any situation. So the king called the kingdom’s pharmacist and the kingdom’s treasurer, he gave each a week to make the strongest poison. Then, each would drink the other one’s poison, then his own, and the one that will survive, will be the one that had the stronger poison.

The pharmacist went straight to work, but the treasurer knew he had no chance, for the pharmacist was much more experienced in this field, so instead, he made up a plan to survive and make sure the pharmacist dies. On the last day the pharmacist suddenly realized that the treasurer would know he had no chance, so he must have a plan. After a little thought, the pharmacist realized what the treasurer’s plan must be, and he concocted a counter plan, to make sure he survives and the treasurer dies. When the time came, the king summoned both of them. They drank the poisons as planned, and the treasurer died, the pharmacist survived, and the king didn’t get what he wanted.

What exactly happened there?

Answers up by tomorrow! I’ll probably begin doing this every other day from here on out, so be sure to tune in for different brain teasers! Comment with your guesses, folks.

Trivial Trivia

Jon Lim Brain Teaser, logic, Trivia Brainteasers 4 Comments

Two weeks ago, during the interviews with LIVE 2009 Candidates, we posed a few interesting logic questions to examine their thought process. Below is one of my favourites, and I will post the answer tomorrow morning.

You are stuck in a room with two doors. One of the doors leads to a room made from magnifying glass, causing anything that enters the room to be incinerated by the sun. The other door leads to a fire-breathing dragon.

How will you get out?

Leave a comment with your answer! If I get enough response, I might make this a regular thing!
